The BRICS alliance, which originally comprised Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has unveiled its plan for an expansive transformation during the three-day summit held in Johannesburg. The group, founded in 2009 to amplify the voice of the global South and act as a counterbalance to the G7 nations, is opening its doors to new participants. Notably, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Ethiopia, Egypt, Argentina, and the United Arab Emirates have received invitations to join this eminent league, and their formal induction is scheduled for January 1, 2024.
BRICS aims to foster equitable and inclusive global development while challenging the dominance of the G7, consisting of the UK, US, Canada, France, Italy, Japan, and Germany. Representatives from BRICS have refuted concerns about the alliance taking an anti-Western stance under the influence of China and Russia.
With its founding members accounting for 40% of the world’s population and over 30% of global economic output, BRICS seeks to lead a new era for developing nations. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the summit, highlighting the organization’s commitment to building a just and prosperous world.
Chinese President Xi Jinping lauded the expansion, emphasizing its historical significance as a symbol of unity and collaboration among BRICS nations and other developing countries. This move is expected to pave the way for additional expansions, given that 16 more nations have expressed formal interest in joining.
Although four of the five BRICS leaders were present in Johannesburg for the summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin chose not to attend in person due to an International Criminal Court warrant linked to the abduction of children from Ukraine. Represented by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Putin delivered a pre-recorded video address. Amid ongoing attention surrounding Russia, Putin addressed the significance of deepening ties with African nations, including assurances of stable food and fuel supplies. He also critiqued Western powers and their perceived disregard for equitable international relations.
As BRICS embarks on this historic expansion, it is poised to embark on a new phase of cooperation and solidarity, fostering a diverse community of nations dedicated to shaping a more inclusive global future.
