The tournament is offering a record $65 million in prize money, the most ever at the US Open. This year also marks the 50th year of equal prize money being distributed to both the men’s and women’s champions.
In the top women’s match on Louis Armstrong Stadium, former champion Sloane Stephens takes on Brazilian 18th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia. Haddad Maia reached the French Open semi-finals this year, while Stephens has struggled for form in 2023. However, a recent good run of six wins from nine matches should provide reason for optimism.
In the top men’s match, Novak Djokovic will kick off his latest attempt to win a 24th Grand Slam title. The 36-year-old is participating in the US Open for the first time since 2021 after being denied entry due to his reluctance to receive the Covid-19 vaccine.
British hopes will be pinned on Yuriko Miyazaki, who faces off with Margarita Betova in the women’s singles. None of the British men in the main draw will be in action on day one.
